Richard E. Guilford is a founding partner of GUILFORD SARVAS & CARBONARA LLP. In 1961 he completed his undergraduate degree at Case Western University (now Case Western Reserve University) and earned his Bachelor of Law (Ll.B) degree at UCLA School of Law in 1964. Mr. Guilford was admitted to the California Bar in 1965.
Mr. Guilford began his legal career with State Compensation Insurance Fund (SCIF) in 1965, initially handling workers' compensation defense matters and then civil and subrogation matters. He remained with SCIF until 1973.
In 1973 Richard, his wife and their two cats began a fantastic 18,000 mile voyage across the South Pacific and back aboard a 32-foot sloop. Their three year journey took them to French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand. One lucky cat never got seasick.
Upon his return in 1976, Mr. Guilford rejoined SCIF, staying another four years. He then moved to Jones Nelson Ford and Haley in 1980, where he was a partner until 1987.
In 1987, Richard took to the seas again with his wife and two sons (but no cats) aboard a 40-foot sailboat. The second voyage lasted two years and added New Caledonia and Australia to the previous ports of call. One lucky son never got seasick.
In 1989, he returned to Jones Nelson. Ten years later, Richard, Carl W. Steiner, Alan D. Sarvas and Frank E. Carbonara formed Guilford Steiner Sarvas & Carbonara LLP (GSS&C), now Guilford Sarvas & Carbonara LLP (GS&C.)
Richard E. Guilford has presented seminars and lectures since 1998 and has had 14 published opinions, as well as six non-published opinions. The California Supreme Court has granted five of his Petitions for Review. In 2007 he was presented the Workers Compensation Defense Attorney of the Year award by the Workers Compensation section of the State Bar. In June, 2011, Mr. Guilford, was honored for his years of dedication to GS&C and California Insurance Guarantee Association at the California Workers' Compensation Defense Attorney Association's (CWCDAA) annual summer conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Effective January 1, 2012, Richard retired his active partnership with GS&C LLP. He remains with us as of-counsel and continues his work on special projects and appellate matters.
